We have seen many reviews in the media where Travelex (online) provided the best deal. They are a large reputable company (established 1976) with websites for 20 nationalities. When we checked, Travelex US and UK sites had price promises (check your locale). UK cutomers: could collect their order free from any Travelex shop (many at airports) and home delivery was free for purchases over £500 (check latest info on site). We have seen some marginally better deals some from a 2 year old company (that has now gone bankrupt)and from sites that typically require you to collect from a single address in London.
Note: You do not get the online deal at Travelex Shops - airport foreign exchange rates are notoriously high. But you can order online and arrange to collect from the airport.

Why use this search engine?: +expandSearches over 600 airlines and booking sites like Expedia & Edreams. Very flexible - you can enter date ranges and in some circumstances a whole country, for price information before refining your search. Cons: Although it covers more booking agents than Flights.Via.Us.Com, it does not cover the same breadth of low cost airlines.2. Flights.Via.Us.Comloading ....

Pros/Cons; when to use?: +expand660 airlines and sites like Opodo & Ebookers. 100 low cost airlines (many excluded by other comparison sites because they don't pay commission).
best for:
1.single (one way) tickets,
2. journeys that combine flights from different operators,
3. short haul routes with low cost airlines.
Very good at identifying and combining flights for a cheaper price. Often average results for a comaprison engine, but its technology sometimes enables it to identify a fantastic bargain (we seen a savings of 60% over prices quoted on other comparison sites). Cons: you have to enter specific dates. Does not include as many travel booking sites as Skyscanner.

In a test of Travel Insurance price comparison sites the New York Times found that SquareMouth's results included policies missed by the others. We have affiliated with them.
In our tests, none of the comparison sites appeared to offer policies for long "gap year" vacations. For these you could also try World Nomads (below), or STA.
